Discovering the Arctic future - as a part of Europe Conference

9-10 November 2017, Rovaniemi, Finland



Northernmost Europe is playing an important role in the development of the EU. With its vast deposits of natural resources and pristine yet fragile nature, European Arctic offers multiple opportunities for European wide cooperation. In the Arctic sparsely populated regions, we offer a solid foundation for innovation and entrepreneurship build on thriving industrial development and advanced cluster collaboration. Through active implementation of smart specialisation, we have established wide interregional cooperation across Europe.

It is our pleasure to invite you to DISCOVERING THE ARCTIC FUTURE - AS A PART OF EUROPE - CONFERENCE, 9-10.11.2017 Rovaniemi, Finland. The conference will be organised by the Regional Council of Lapland, in cooperation with Committee of the Regions (CoR), Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) and S3 Platforms.

The conference will gather more than two hundred Europeans to discuss about future of our continent, regional development, Smart Specialisation, Arctic opportunities and first of all, interregional cooperation. During the days, Lapland is hosting a Committee of the Regions ECON Committee meeting, Northern Sparsely Populated Areas network annual forum and Smart Specialisation (S3) high-level meeting in Rovaniemi. Two days will be full of interesting discussions and ideas about European success stories, future funding schemes and innovation.

Thursday morning session is joint workshop with Committee of the Regions (CoR), the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) Network and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Smart Specialisation lunch buffet - Poster show is aiming to increase of awareness about the regional S3 implemented in the NSAP. Thursday afternoon is dedicated for the NSPA forum- looking for the future.   

On Friday morning, Lapland is proud to host CoR ECON Conference which has status of European Week of Regions and Cities (EWRC 2017) Local Event as a part of Reflecting on Europe campaign. The session is consisting of interactive panels and we have invited experts around Europe to discuss about emerging industries, SME scale-up initiatives and support for local entrepreneurship. Friday afternoon participants will be taken to origins of Lappish innovation. Smart Specialisation in practice session will take you to Arctic innovation environments, including Santa's village on Arctic Circle.

You are warmly welcome to discuss how to deepen cooperation with European Arctic and how to utilise better European funding instruments and initiatives together. If we are lucky enough, we might experience the beautiful winter colours of snowy scenery and Northern Lights above the polar night sky.
